Walnut is my Spirit Wood

  • Back & Sides: Bastogne Walnut (Individual selection available below)

    Top: Sitka Spruce

    • Premium Upgrade Available: Old Growth Redwood

    • Harvested from the Oregon Coast by a father and son, this material is incredibly special to me! I have 40+ sets from two different trees, which offers a wonderful opportunity to build an intimate relationship with the wood, while providing consistent results.

    • Bastogne Walnut is less dense than Maple, but produces similar tonal qualities in balance, power, clarity and resonance - for those looking for a touch of extra darkness tonally, I recommend Walnut. To elevate the fatness of warmth and resonance to a fingerstyle level guitar, I recommend the consideration of a premium materials upgrade by pairing with an Old Growth Redwood top.

  • Am I allowed to pick out my own wood?

    • With Bastogne Walnut back and sides, you will be able to select your very own back. MW will pair the back with a set of perfectly matching sides, cut from the very same tree. Make your selection below!

    • All individual top selection, for standard and premium materials, are always done by my hands - no exceptions.

Can I pair a walnut back with contrasting sides? Pretty please?

    • Nope! Sorry folks, but this is not a mix and match. No contrasting sides allowed here. Walnut backs are paired with matching sides only - no exceptions.

  • Sometimes the wood chooses you.

    • This gallery offers five different choices of Bastogne Walnut.

    • Move through the slideshow using right to left arrows, or thumbnails at the bottom.

    • All backs are paired with matching sides. Sides are not photographed because it is a nuisance to do so. They will be a perfect match, I promise.

    • The largest guitar size possible for each set is labeled on the material. If it says 15.5”, then it can be selected for a 15.5” guitar or smaller. Be sure to select a set that is labeled for the size you want, or larger.

    • Material ID is found in the bottom left hand corner of the photo (ie. W1, W2).

Bastogne Walnut

You are currently viewing the book matched face of an open and joined billet that is 1” thick and eagerly awaiting its carve session. As material is removed, it reveals new grain while getting further away from the book match. Sometimes this creates a bit of asymmetry in the grain from bass side to treble side. This is the case even with perfectly quartersawn material. This is the nature and beauty of solid wood archtops, and it is to be embraced, admired, and loved.
